Young chess star from Lebach wins a strong 5th place on Kos!

As part of the ACO World Amateur Chess Championship 2025, which took place in the luxurious 5-star resort Atlantica Belvedere on the Greek island of Kos, 10-year-old Liam Schröder from Lebach (Saarland) caused a stir with an impressive performance. With over 130 participants from different countries, the tournament was held in seven performance groups (A-G). Liam started in Group F and started the tournament with a relatively low ranking, which put him in last place for the time being.

Despite the bad start, Liam showed remarkable nerves and class. At the end of the competitions he reached 5th place, tied with the fourth place finisher. Particularly noteworthy is his draw against the eventual tournament winner and his victory over the runner-up. Unfortunately, unfortunate games against opponents from England prevented us from achieving an even better ranking.

Intense two weeks

His father Marco Schröder accompanied Liam and describes the two weeks as intense and emotional. The family used the tournament-free Sunday to explore the beautiful Greek island. A special addition to the tournament was the 91-year-old player, who impressed the participants with her enthusiasm and endurance.

Marco Schröder sums up his son's experiences positively and quotes the famous basketball player Dirk Nowitzki: "Either you win or you learn." For the Schröders, the tournament was not only a sporting event, but also an opportunity for personal development and a family vacation.

Thanks to the organizers

The family would like to thank the organizers of the tournament, especially Falko Bindrich and Tobias Hirneise, whose commitment made the ACO World Amateur Chess Championship an inspiring experience. Overall, the event was a perfect combination of vacation, passion for chess and personal growth for the Schröder family.
