Handball: New signing Elnoamany celebrates a successful debut at SGSH Dragons
Islam Elnoamany has joined the SGSH Dragons goalkeeping team and recently made his debut in the third division. He has the opportunity to prove himself further in the game against Homburg next Saturday evening. In a recent game against Haßloch, Elnoamany saved two balls before conceding his first goal. Fortunately, the evening was successful for him as SGSH won the game 34:26, giving the team a much-needed point.
The 22-year-old goalkeeper, born in 2003, will not only support the Dragons in the future, but will also continue to play for his previous club, HC Gelpe/Strombach. This is possible thanks to a double play right that was given to him. His signing responds to the ongoing injury problems in the SGSH squad, particularly goalkeeper Hendrik Halfmann, who is struggling with hip problems. Elnoamany, together with Luca Jannack and Halfmann, forms the goalkeeping team for the current season.
Background and development
Elnoamany is the first Egyptian in the SGSH's third division history. He came to Germany with his parents seven years ago when his mother accepted a job offer in Bonn. At first Elnoamany concentrated on swimming because there was no good handball club in Bonn. But the talented athlete soon realized that his passion lay in handball. In 2021 he won a silver medal at the German Championships in the 200 meter butterfly with SG WAGO Bonn.
His return to handball took him to the A-Youth Bundesliga at TSV Bonn before he started at HC Gelpe/Strombach in 2023. There he was also able to work with former SGSH actors. Now he has the chance to continue to learn and grow through the third division experience with the Dragons.
Current situation at the Dragons
The SGSH Dragons are under pressure in the current season. With only 2:16 points, they are in second-to-last place in the South-West season and are aiming for their first home win in the upcoming home game against Homburg, who are also struggling with personnel difficulties. Coach Lars Faßbender emphasizes the need for redemption after the last home game and highlights the importance of Elnoamany's talents for the team. In preparation, Elnoamany trained intensively with the team and wants to prove himself as a valuable support in goal.
In addition, due to scheduling conflicts, he will continue to complete two training sessions per week with both clubs. This allows him to gain experience while developing his skills. The HC Gelpe/Strombach coach, Daniel Rodriguez, supports this arrangement and sees long-term benefits for Elnoamany's career.
The third division teams play in a return round this season, with the best teams qualifying for the promotion round. The bottom three will be relegated, which increases the pressure on the SGSH Dragons. In order to secure the chance of winning the DHB Cup next season, the Dragons urgently need to collect points in the race to stay in the league.
The upcoming games and especially the upcoming match against TV Homburg offer the Dragons the opportunity to prove themselves and turn the season around.
