Two cases of hit-and-run in Wissen – police are asking for information!

On May 24, 2025, two hit and run incidents were reported in Wissen, which prompted the Neuwied/Rhine police to look for witnesses. This was announced in a recent press release referencing the incident that occurred on the same day. Neither the person who caused the accident nor the vehicles involved have been identified yet.

The first incident occurred on the night of May 23rd to 24th on the parking deck of the regional train station. A black Audi A6 Avant was damaged by an unknown vehicle, whose driver then left the scene of the accident without permission. A similar case occurred in the Rewe Petz parking lot on Nisterstrasse. Here an unknown car hit the rear of a parked Skoda Octavia while pulling out of a parking space and also left the scene of the accident.

Legal regulations in the event of an accident

According to German law, unauthorized removal from the scene of an accident is regulated in Section 142 of the Criminal Code. A brief moment of inattention, for example when pulling out of a parking space, can quickly lead to a significant legal problem. It doesn't matter whether the driver was at fault or whether the damage was minor. Those involved in the accident must remain at the scene of the accident and provide the opportunity to identify the person and vehicle.

Simply leaving a note on the windshield is usually not considered sufficient. According to experts, the appropriate waiting time after an accident should depend on various factors such as time of day, location, extent of damage and traffic density. A waiting time of 20 to 60 minutes is often assumed, especially for minor damage in public parking lots.

Legal consequences and protection options

The consequences for hit-and-run accidents can be serious. In addition to fines, there is a risk of entries in the certificate of good conduct, points in Flensburg and even the revocation of the driving license. Even first-time offenders are not immune to losing their driving license. The legal consequences can be devastating, especially for damages that exceed 1,300 euros.

If a complaint is made, the police will initiate an investigation, which will include witness interviews and forensic investigation. It is important to know that those accused have the right to remain silent. Legal advice should be sought from the beginning in order to be able to end the process as discreetly and successfully as possible.

The police are asking witnesses who have any information about the incidents to call 02742-9350 or send an email to pwwissen@polizei.rlp.de. Help from the legal side can also help avoid the loss of a driver's license and criminal charges, as described on anwalt.de.
