Sports class at GemS Vopeliuspark: New opportunities for students who love exercise!
The Vopeliuspark community school in Sulzbach has big news: starting in the coming school year of 2025, it will open a sports class. The school, which has been recognized as a “SportBewegte SchuleSaar” since 2024, is placing a clear focus on promoting sport. This initiative is carried out in close cooperation with the State Sports Association for Saarland (LSVS) and is intended to offer young sporting talents new opportunities. The new sports classes are selected through a sports motor aptitude test, which the children must pass successfully. In this sports class, students are offered six sports hours per week, which are four hours more than the usual offering at other secondary schools.
In addition to the regular sports lessons, the program also includes two hours of athletics, which are offered in cooperation with the LC Sulzbach. These measures aim to promote enthusiasm for sport and exercise while at the same time creating a special framework for talented and sport-loving students.
School successes
The Vopeliuspark community school recently celebrated a graduation ceremony at which a total of 31 students received their secondary school leaving certificate (HSA), 30 students received their intermediate school leaving certificate (MBA) and four students received their Abitur. The celebration took place in a festively decorated auditorium and, weather permitting, outdoors. Such successes are also reflected in the school’s other activities.
As part of environmental campaigns, students in grades 7 and 10 collected garbage around the school grounds under the direction of Alexander Böser. The school is also known for its awards, including the “Start Chance School” plaque, which will be presented at the Ministry of Education and Culture on August 30, 2024. This plaque certifies the school's participation in a program to support school development over a period of ten years.
Diverse offer
In addition to sporting activities, the community school also offers a wide range of exercise activities during breaks, afternoon work groups and participation in school sports competitions. These awards and the commitment to an active lifestyle are part of the concept that has made the school a “SportBewegten Schule Saar”. The introduction of the sports class will now breathe further life into this concept.
Registration for the coming school year takes place from February 12th to 18th, 2025. Among other things, the half-year certificate, a birth certificate and proof of measles vaccination are required.
Another highlight was the presentation evening of the internship weeks, where 86 students from grade 8 presented their experiences from almost 30 different professional fields. Such events not only promote learning, but also social engagement. For example, through a fundraising run, the students raised a sum of 750 euros, half of which will be used for internal school projects and the other half for educational projects in Africa, in particular shelters for children with albinism in Uganda.
Saarbrücken newspaper reports on these important developments, which contribute to the continuation of the successful work of the Vopeliuspark community school.
