A roundabout for Rohrbach-Berg? Citizens urgently demand a solution!

At the warehouse intersection on the B127 in Rohrbach-Berg, the call to improve traffic safety is becoming louder and louder. There have been 25 injuries and one fatality there since 2012. The Rohrbach warehouse has now called for urgent solutions as more and more customers are avoiding the entrance because they fear the dangerous situation. The main cause of the accidents are priority violations, especially when turning left from the warehouse entrance, as meinbezirk.at reports.

Some measures have already been taken to increase road safety in the past. These include the introduction of a one-sided 80 km/h speed limit in the direction of Linz, the installation of “Stop” priority signs on neighboring municipal roads, and the marking of a dedicated left-turn lane. Danger signs such as “intersection with road without priority” and an additional sign “dangerous intersection” were also put up. However, according to the warehouse, these measures only have a limited effect because speed limits are often ignored.

Demand for a roundabout

Martin Obernberger, managing director of the warehouse, has now called for a roundabout as the best solution. A Facebook poll shows that over 1,100 users support this proposal. Nevertheless, there are also alternative suggestions from users that, for example, bring into play acceleration lanes or underpasses or overpasses.

Mayor Andreas Lindorfer is behind the construction of a roundabout and is currently in talks with the state of Upper Austria. However, there is no provision for a roundabout in the country's current plan. The office of State Infrastructure Councilor Günther Steinkellner reports that the traffic situation has calmed down since the previous measures were introduced and that no further traffic measures are currently planned.

Road safety in a larger context

The problem at the warehouse intersection is not isolated. The German traffic safety report also shows that road safety remains a central issue at the federal political level. In 1973, the German Bundestag decided to prepare an annual accident prevention report in order to improve road safety, which mobilitaetsforum.bund.de states. The aim is to use the results to update the traffic safety strategy.

The federal government's new traffic safety program from 2021 to 2030 is intended to evaluate and control traffic safety work. The focus is on a holistic view of road safety, which should take into account both local and national measures. The situation at critical points such as the warehouse intersection highlights how important these initiatives are to reduce accident rates and increase safety for all road users.
