Fire brigade warns: Parked streets endanger lives in St. Ingbert!

In St. Ingbert, the fire department and the city administration are facing an urgent problem. Narrow lanes, parked intersections and confusing bottlenecks make it significantly more difficult for fire engines, rescue vehicles and delivery services to get through. This situation could cost vital minutes in an emergency, as the Saarbrücker Zeitung reports.

Internal driver training courses at the fire department in Rohrbach have shown that heavy emergency vehicles can often only drive through certain sections of the road with considerable effort. Particularly critical points are blocked junctions, intersections and vehicles parked on both sides on narrow lanes. Parking in fire department access and in front of or on fire hydrants also increases the problem.

Call for insight from road users

The city administration appeals to all drivers to keep at least three meters of remaining road width free for fire engines. Fire engines are up to 2.55 meters wide, with additional clearance required. Even if a car “just fits”, this may be too narrow for a fire engine. The fire brigade and the city hope for the understanding of all road users in order to ensure safety and civil protection.

According to STVO2GO, fire brigade access roads must be kept clear across their entire width. Stopping and parking in front of and in officially marked fire brigade areas is prohibited at any time (Section 12 Paragraph 1 StVO). This stopping ban applies regardless of the condition of the curbs, whether lowered or high. Fire department access roads are essential for quick access and maneuvering of emergency vehicles.

Legal situation and consequences

Hard shoulders must also be kept clear, and vehicles parked in public traffic areas in front of or in fire service access can be towed away immediately. This can also happen on private property, but there is the possibility that stopping and parking cannot be punished with fines if it is not a public traffic area.

The legal regulations are there to ensure that help can be provided quickly in an emergency. However, those responsible must be given the opportunity to repark the vehicle before towing. Drivers who do not speak German are not exempt from towing costs if the no-parking zone is marked accordingly.

The current challenges in St. Ingbert illustrate the need to take road safety seriously. as well as the obligation of road users to keep the necessary space free for emergency vehicles. Proper parking is viewed as an active contribution to safety and civil protection.
