Renovation work at the Alpincenter Bottrop: A punctual start to the winter season!

On November 6, 2025, the FENNE Baugesellschaft mbH from Gladbeck that the renovation work at the Alpincenter Bottrop has been successfully completed. The project, which was completed on time after 21,000 hours of work and even a month before the contractually agreed date, included a comprehensive renovation of an almost 200 meter long conveyor belt tunnel and the parallel emergency tunnel.

Construction of the renovation work began on May 19, 2025. Due to the special hillside location and the extreme gradients of up to 23.4 percent, the project required precise execution. Senior construction manager Andre Stölle praised the team for their excellent performance under the difficult conditions that prevailed throughout the project.

Challenges in tunnel construction

An impressive 4,300 cubic meters of concrete and 850 tons of reinforcing steel were used to renovate the tunnel. The work process was organized in two shifts with up to 30 specialists per shift, which underlines the efficiency of the work. This way of working is an example of the advanced techniques used in the planning and implementation of tunnel construction projects. The Sweco GmbH For example, offers support services in tunnel construction, ranging from planning to consulting to monitoring, taking complex circumstances such as geology and traffic into account.

Another feature of the renovation was the use of specialized equipment. Cranes with crawler tracks and adapted formwork systems were used to cope with the demanding logistical requirements. FENNE Baugesellschaft can look back on over 100 years of history and has specialized in demanding civil engineering and industrial construction projects, which also includes dealing with such complex challenges.

A timely start to the winter season

With the completion of the work, an exciting 2025 winter season begins for winter sports enthusiasts in North Rhine-Westphalia and beyond. The timely completion of the Alpine Center will not only be important for the region, but also for the many visitors who head for the longest ski hall in the world. Such projects require not only technical know-how, but also innovative strength, as promoted, for example, by the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in planning. BIM makes it possible to bring together data from all project participants and identify problems at an early stage, which not only improves the planning but also the acceptance of infrastructure projects.
