Water for everyone: 150 drinking bottles distributed for those in need in Saarbrücken!

On August 12, 2025, 150 drinking bottles were handed over to the city's drug help center in Saarbrücken. This initiative aims to provide people with limited economic opportunities access to fresh drinking water at public drinking fountains from April to October. There are a total of five such drinking fountains in central places in the state capital, including the St. Johanner Markt and the castle. These fountains operate between April and October and provide free drinking water that is sensor-controlled and barrier-free.

The drinking bottles are distributed to those in need in municipal shared accommodation. To ensure efficient distribution, the city authorities are working with emergency housing assistance organizations. In addition, the state capital's street work is involved, which distributes filled bottles directly to those affected. The bottles are made from recycled materials, which supports the sustainability of the measure. Ilka Borr, head of the Office for Health, Prevention and Social Affairs, emphasizes the importance of the choice of material. Tobias Raab, Head of Economics, Social Affairs and Digitalization, emphasizes the relevance of this measure, especially for homeless and homeless people during the hot summer months.

Comprehensive relief measures

In Wiesbaden, too, active work is being done to provide people without a permanent address with drinking water in acute stressful situations. Here the drinking bottles are handed out by the street social work of the social services and job center and the city police. The head of the social department, Dr. Patricia Becher points out the health risks that exist for homeless people in extreme heat. The outreach street social work specifically visits known locations in order to give specialists the opportunity to distribute water bottles and at the same time provide information about offers of help.

The city police support the campaign by distributing water bottles during their patrols. City councilor Andreas Kowol emphasizes the danger to homeless people in high temperatures. Project manager Nadine Gärtner emphasizes the pragmatic help on site: “Through regular visits to known locations, we not only offer water, but also advice and support.” The bottles also bear the logo of the municipal working group #WOHIN, which has existed since 2021 and is under the leadership of the social benefits and job center. Its aim is to help homeless and homeless people in Wiesbaden. Information about people in need can be reported to #wohinwiesbadende or by telephone to the coordination office “#WOHiN” on (0611) 318236.

The measures in Saarbrücken and Wiesbaden demonstrate the commitment of both cities to provide disadvantaged people with important support in the form of free drinking water during the hot months. Such initiatives are essential to promote the health and well-being of those who need it most.
