Traditional costumes, animals and tradition: the Alpine lift to Sellamatt inspires everyone!

On Saturday, June 21, 2025, a special tradition will be continued in Obertoggenburg: the alpine procession to Alp Sellamatt. In the early hours of the morning, farming families and dairymen accompany their animals to the pastures of the largest alp in eastern Switzerland. toggenburg24.ch reports that this event is deeply rooted in regional culture and the lived customs are celebrated. The traditional costumes of the farming families contribute to the festive atmosphere and point to the importance of the Alpine season.

The ceremonial opening of the Alpzeit takes place at the foot of the majestic Churfirsten. The “Öberefahre”, a highlight of the Alpine procession, is accompanied by the cheerful sounds of bells, while the participants keep the tradition alive with joyful “hooting and cheering”. At this event, spectators have the opportunity to experience authentic Alpine culture up close and gain an insight into centuries-old customs.

Arrival to Alp Sellamatt

For visitors who would like to experience the celebrations, the gondola chairlift in Alt St. Johann is available from 4:30 a.m. This takes guests to the Sellamatt mountain station, where a 15-minute walk leads to the Alp plain. After the Alpine lift, you have the opportunity to explore the surrounding area on a hike up the Chäserrugg. There are two hiking trails to choose from: a sporty route over the Hinterrugg or a leisurely path over the Stöfeli to the summit at 2,262 m above sea level. M. chaeserrugg.ch adds that this is an ideal opportunity to enjoy the alpine landscape.

The celebration of the alpine procession to Sellamatt not only accompanies the herd of animals to the meadows, but also highlights the traditions and communal spirit of the region. This event is therefore an important part of the cultural heritage in Obertoggenburg.
