Newest incubator for the Saarbrücken Zoo – a gift from friends!

The Saarbrücken Zoo can look forward to valuable support. Today, June 13, 2025, a modern incubator for bird eggs worth 4,100 euros was handed over to the zoo. This donation comes from the “Friends of the Saarbrücker Zoo e.V.” association, which has supported numerous projects to preserve biodiversity since it was founded in 1972. Zoo director Jakob Kolleck accepted the gift from the club chairmen Frank-Thomas Bienko and Ali Mohammad.

The newly purchased incubator allows bird eggs to be raised artificially if the parents cannot afford this. After hatching, the chicks are returned to their parents, which is an important step in safeguarding the zoo's animal species. In a zoo that attracts around 200,000 visitors every year and houses around 1,000 animals from more than 100 species, the support of the support association plays a crucial role.

Anniversary celebration of the support association

The support association “Friends of the Saarbrücken Zoo e.V.” is celebrating its 50th anniversary this Saturday in Saarbrücken Castle. Around 100 guests are expected for this special occasion, including Saarland Interior Minister Reinhold Jost (SPD), who not only has a long connection to the zoo but has also worked there as a grill master. The mayor of Saarbrücken, Uwe Conradt (CDU), unfortunately cannot be present in person, but will send a video message.

The homepage of the support association quotes Catherine of Siena: “It is not the act of starting that is rewarded, but only the perseverance.” This philosophy reflects the stability of the association and its numerous achievements, which include, among other things, the construction of an aviary for lemurs and an enclosure for cranes.

Thanks to such initiatives, the Saarbrücken Zoo can continue to fulfill its important role in the education and conservation of wildlife. The zoo is open daily and remains a popular destination for animal lovers and families from the region.

In summary, it can be said that the modern incubator is not only a technical enrichment for the zoo, but also a symbolic symbol of the commitment that the support association has been making to preserve biodiversity for five decades. The close cooperation between the association and the zoo shows how sustainable results can be achieved through shared commitment and perseverance.

Those interested can find further information about the Saarbrücken Zoo and the support association on the website Saarbrücken town hall and the Saarbrücken newspaper.
