Lions Clubs support knowledge workshop: 6,000 euros for MINT courses

Representatives of the four Saarbrücken Lions Clubs presented a check for 6,000 euros to the Wissenwerkstatt Saarbrücken e.V. today, June 4, 2025. This financial support is an important contribution to the promotion of MINT subjects (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, technology) and is needed for the continuous implementation of the numerous courses that the knowledge workshop can offer. Dr. Heiner Wannemacher, the first chairman, and Dr. Nicole Maas, the head of the knowledge workshop, reported that financing the courses is becoming more difficult every year.

The Saarbrücken knowledge workshop was founded eleven years ago and has established itself as an important part of the educational landscape in Saarland. Its stated goal is to arouse interest in MINT subjects among children and young people between the ages of 8 and 18. Every year, around 6,000 children and young people take part in more than 500 MINT courses, which are offered in the mornings for school classes and in the afternoons for private participants.

Offers from the knowledge workshop

The knowledge workshop offers over 80 different course topics that aim to promote practical experimentation and DIY in natural sciences and technology. Through the opportunity to experience phenomena from natural science and technology up close, carry out experiments and build technical workpieces, participants gain valuable practical experience. All courses are free of charge, which is an important incentive for the young target group.

The knowledge workshop's equipment covers an area of 450 m², which includes a mechanical workshop for metal and woodworking, laboratories for physics, electrical and control engineering as well as a room for robotics and 3D printing. This allows participants to build their own objects that they can take home with them at the end of the course.

Long-term perspectives

The activities of the knowledge workshop are not only designed to expand the participants' knowledge, but also to promote their professional and personal development. The topics of the courses are based on the interests of the participants and complement the school curricula.

The Saarbrücken Knowledge Workshop is a creative place where children and young people can immerse themselves in the world of science and technology. In order to secure financing, the Wissenwerkstatt has set up a donation account: Wissenwerkstatt Saarbrücken e.V., IBAN: DE98 5904 0000 0606 0644 00, Commerzbank Saar. Those interested can find more information about the courses and offers on the website www.wiwe-sb.de.

The support from the Lions Clubs and the dedicated work of the knowledge workshop make a decisive contribution to inspiring young people in the region to pursue scientific and technical careers.
