Psychosomatics in Püttlingen: Shrinking patient care is causing concern!

The Psychosomatic Institute Outpatient Clinic (PsIA) at the Knappschaftsklinikum Saar in Püttlingen, which was the first of its kind in southwest Germany to open about two and a half years ago, is faced with a drastic decline in its capacity. An expansion to 200 patients was originally planned, but this is now not being implemented. This is causing concern among patients and families as the facility has recently been able to quickly recruit around 50 patients per week through word of mouth to treat their mental and physical ailments. This positive response now stands in stark contrast to the current situation, in which capacity remains limited to 100 patients.

PsIA specializes in the treatment of somatoform disorders, chronic pain and psychological disorders caused by physical illnesses such as cancer or diabetes. In order to harmonize the interplay between body and soul, the facility offers multimodal treatment approaches, which are supported by close collaboration with other specialist departments at the Knappschaftsklinikum. This ensures comprehensive diagnostics and therapy that benefits many patients.

Treatment options and challenges

The aim of psychosomatic medicine, which takes both mental and physical factors into account in the development of illnesses, is to stabilize the health of patients through psychotherapeutic procedures. At PsIA, patients with serious physical and psychosocial problems receive comprehensive care. This support also means that treatment courses can be continued seamlessly after inpatient therapy in order to ensure the success of the therapy. In practice, this includes, among other things, the treatment of stress such as dizziness, irritable bowel syndrome and heart anxiety.

The treatments are financed by all statutory health insurance companies and most private insurance companies, which should enable a broad patient base to receive help. However, news of the restriction on patient numbers could leave many deciding whether to wait for an alternative treatment option or give up on PsIA.

The outlook for the PsIA

Failure to comply with expansion plans is a clear sign of the challenges that exist in the health sector, particularly in psychosomatics. Decision-makers urgently need to find solutions to meet the increasing demand for psychosomatic care because patient needs are diverse and complex. The PsIA at the Knappschaftsklinikum therefore remains a central point for many people who are dependent on appropriate therapy and support. Thoughts about the future of psychosomatic medicine in Saarland are needed in order to do justice to the changed framework conditions.
