Restrictions on regional transport: construction sites on the Rhine until June!
Current construction work on the Rhine route between Koblenz and Mainz is leading to extensive restrictions on regional traffic. As the Borken newspaper reported, the work will last until mid-June, which will significantly affect accessibility to the region.
The Rhineland-Palatinate South Public Transport Association has presented a replacement concept for the coming days. Between Bingen and Koblenz in particular, the Middle Rhine Railway (Trans Regio) runs every hour from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., while early and night hours are covered by replacement buses. The regional express trains (DB Regio and Vlexx) that run from Mainz and Kaiserslautern end in Bingen all day long, and from there there are hourly bus connections to Koblenz.
Restrictions due to construction work
The planned construction work on the Rhine stretches is not the only challenge for commuters in the region. Additional information from Railway information show that timetable adjustments, train cancellations and rail replacement services can still be expected in 2025. The current construction work in Rüsselsheim also affects the connection to Frankfurt/Main.
An important project of the regional transport providers is the new Mosel-Lux transport contract, which came into force on December 15, 2024. This should enable the Trier western line to go into operation on March 3, 2025. The new connections between Trier, Luxembourg, Perl and Koblenz are intended to increase passenger numbers through improved services.
Future outlook and digital tickets
With the new ongoing transport contract, mileage in the region will be significantly increased. The timetable will be increased to 2,850,790 kilometers per year, and all journeys will have train escorts. Also new are the additional late and night connections between Koblenz and Trier. At the same time, customers are asked to purchase their tickets digitally via the DB Navigator, as ticket machines are to be dismantled at many Saarland train stations, such as Perl-Schengen and Nennig-Remich.
Customers should check regularly for current connections, particularly due to ongoing construction work and associated restrictions. As a long-term measure, electrification work on various routes is also planned for 2025, including the Eifel line and the Ahrtalbahn.
It remains crucial for commuters to closely monitor developments in local transport in order to minimize possible long waiting times and journey interruptions.
