Open Day: Naturists celebrate freedom and community!

On May 31, 2025, the “Sports et loisirs naturistes Luxembourg” (SLNL) association is holding an open day to stimulate interest in the naturist movement in Luxembourg. The naturist association, which is about a ten-minute drive from Luxembourg City, has only revealed its exact location to members to keep unauthorized people out. Those interested are invited to register in advance to receive a meeting point and directions to the site.

The SLNL area includes a chalet, a pétanque court, a sauna, a swimming pool and sports facilities such as volleyball, archery and table tennis. The association was founded in 1980 and has expanded its area from the original two hectares to four hectares. SLNL has around 350 members, mostly families, with an average age ranging from 30 to over 80 years old. Members maintain the area on a voluntary basis; there are no employees.

Naturism as a way of life

In keeping with the principles of naturism, members emphasize that sexuality has no place in their lifestyle. Violations of this rule will result in immediate exclusion from the club. Naturism is viewed as a way of life that also includes a healthy diet and abstinence from alcohol and tobacco. Members report a feeling of liberation and equality that comes from nudity, emphasizing that nudity does not create shame and that there is no judgment in this environment.

Naturism is closely linked to naturism (nudism), which is defined by the International Naturist Federation as a practice of communal nudity. According to this definition, nudism uses natural elements such as sun, air and water to restore physical and mental balance, as well as promote relaxation and creativity through nudity. This movement sees the naked body as natural and free of shame and places great emphasis on comfort in natural environments.

Historical context of the naturist movement

The historical context of naturism dates back to the late 19th century, when the first official naturist association in Germany was founded in 1898. The popularity of nude bathing increased around 1900, and after World War I, naturist associations increased. The first official nudist beach was opened on Sylt in 1920. During the Nazi era, nudist organizations were initially banned, but were also able to gain support within the regime, which illustrates the complexity of the movement.

In the later years of the 20th century, the popularity of naturism grew beyond Germany, with the first naturist resorts opening in France around 1950. Naturist culture enjoys high social acceptance, particularly in Germany and Austria, while stricter regulations apply in Switzerland, especially in the German-speaking regions.

In summary, SLNL's event not only exemplifies the principles of naturism and nudism, but also serves as a platform for a family atmosphere in which social differences can disappear through shared nudity and lifestyles. At a time when body acceptance and equality are increasingly in focus, such events offer valuable insights into freedom-loving communities.
