Schimmelkopf fights for the title: Highest elevation in Saarland!
The Schimmelkopf in Weiskirchen, with a height of 694.8 meters, is often considered the second highest mountain in Saarland. At times it competed with the Dollberg, which is 695.4 meters high in Otzenhausen, for the title of the highest elevation in Saarland. The difference between the two peaks is 60 centimeters, which illustrates the discrepancy between the two mentions. According to saarbruecker-zeitung.de, the State Office for Surveying determined in 2005 that the Dollberg peaked at 695.4 meters marked. The Schimmelkopf, on the other hand, is 694.8 meters above sea level (NHN).
The geographical location of the mold head is also notable. It is located in the Hunsrück part of the Black Forest High Forest on the border between the districts of Trier-Saarburg in Rhineland-Palatinate and Merzig-Wadern in Saarland. The precise coordinates of the summit are 49° 35′ 21″ N and 6° 48′ 21″ E. There are numerous bodies of water in the area, such as the Burkelsbach in the north and the Holzbach in the south. Historically, both the Dollberg and the Schimmelkopf were considered the highest elevations in Saarland for a long time, with a rounded value of 695 meters.
Nature conservation and recreational opportunities
The Schimmelkopf is part of the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park and is located in a landscape protection area that extends from the Saar loop via Mettlach to Steinberg. In addition, parts of the area are designated as fauna-flora-habitat areas. The Weiskirchen-Schimmelkopf wind farm, which has been in operation since spring 2015, also has an impact on the surrounding area with its four E-115 wind turbines. These systems have a rotor diameter of 115 meters and a total height of 207 meters. Construction work for the wind farm began in spring 2014 and led to the destruction of the original section of the “Weiskircher Höhentour” dream loop, which has since been renamed “Wildnistrail”.
The Schimmelkopf is easily accessible for hikers and nature lovers. There are signposted forest paths that lead directly to the summit. The site also offers a picnic bench and an information sign where visitors can learn more about the area. The federal highway 407 runs north of the Schimmelkopf, while the K 69 and K 142 lead in the immediate vicinity of the mountain. The European long-distance hiking trail E3 also leads over the Schimmelkopf and thus attracts many hikers to this picturesque region.
