Nicholas Great Project Day: Remembrance and commitment for the future!

On May 21, 2025, the Nikolaus Groß project day took place at the Nikolaus Groß community school in Lebach. Under the motto “Against Forgetting,” this special day was used to link the memory of the resistance fighter Nikolaus Groß with social commitment. The students delved deeply into the history and legacy of people who stood for freedom and justice.

The visit of the 8th graders to the exhibition “Willi Graf – a life for freedom” in the German Newspaper Museum in Wadgassen was particularly impressive. This exhibition focuses on the life story of Willi Graf, a member of the resistance group “White Rose”, who is known for her courage, her conscience and her moral courage. The backgrounds of this group are crucial as they fought against the Nazi regime and risked their lives doing so. As the Planet knowledge Reportedly, many members, including Graf, were sentenced to death for distributing leaflets calling for resistance.

Insight into the Nazi era

Class 10 took part in a tour of the National Socialist era in the Historical Museum in Saarbrücken, where they dealt with the frightening facets of history. Class 7 dealt with the literary film adaptation “The Wave”, which offers reflections on conformity and group pressure. Insights into such topics are essential to understand the mechanisms of totalitarian systems and to prevent history from repeating itself.

In addition, the 9th graders received a workshop with the theater director Soni Maier, which was dedicated to the topic of activism. The students were taught how important it is to stand up for their own beliefs. The youth center of the Diocese of Trier and the Saarland Democracy Foundation supported these activities and ensured that the students received well-founded access to topics relating to civil courage and social commitment.

Symbolism and creative pursuits

The 6th graders symbolically designed a royal figure out of papier-mâché to illustrate the value of each individual. This activity took place in connection with Deacon Ralf Knoblauch's royal sculpture campaign and addressed children's rights and individual dignity. Headmaster Andreas Hackert emphasized the important educational mission that Nikolaus Groß's legacy assumes in school work and emphasizes the role of youth in the act of remembering.

The St. Nicholas Project Day not only represents an important part of the school's work, but also helps to keep the memory of the courageous fighters of the past alive. In a world shaped by the lessons of history, student engagement is critically relevant.
