Tradition and modern customs

In recent decades, Halloween has developed into a worldwide celebration format that is interpreted differently in different cultures. While the custom of “Trick or Treat” is widespread in the USA, where children and adults ask for sweets, this custom has also arrived in Germany. Here, groups in costumes parade through residential areas demanding candy while surprising people with creatively designed art installations, such as toilet paper on trees.

The origins of the custom may lie in the Welsh tradition of “Cennad y Meirw”, where wealthy people held feasts for the poor. This tradition was incorporated over time into Christian customs, which involved asking for "soul cake" on All Souls' Day but promising to pray for the deceased of the donors. Disguises play an important role here in protecting the living from the spirits of the deceased - an idea that underlines today's Halloween's acute connection to the Christian holiday.

With this successful combination of tradition and modern fun, the Halloween Zombie Market in Fraulautern will offer a unique experience for everyone and will contribute to strengthening stationary retail and promoting the attractiveness of Saarland's cities.
