Werder Bremen: Horst Steffen takes over as new coach!
Werder Bremen has hired Horst Steffen as their new head coach. He succeeds Ole Werner, who was sacked on Tuesday after deciding against extending his contract. Steffen was officially introduced on Thursday and is now moving into his first position as Bundesliga coach. Details of his contract have not been made public as the two clubs agreed to confidentiality, as Yahoo Sports reports.
Steffen brings an impressive story, having previously coached Elversberg. There he led the team from the fourth to the second division and narrowly missed promotion to the Bundesliga when Elversberg was eliminated in the playoffs against Heidenheim. Last season Elversberg finished 11th, but in the 2024/25 season the team was just one point away from the promotion places, losing the crucial games 4-3 on aggregate.
Career and achievements
Horst Steffen, 56 years old, also has experience as a coach at Chemnitzer FC, Stuttgarter Kickers and Preußen Münster. He also worked in the youth academies of Borussia Mönchengladbach and MSV Duisburg. Under his leadership, Elversberg was promoted to the 3rd division in 2022 and won the regional league championship in 2023. Bremen's managing director for football, Clemens Fritz, praised Steffen's work at Elversberg and described his appointment as a valuable addition to the club.
For Steffen, the contact from Werder Bremen is recognition of his achievements to date. He is confident in the club's plans and sees the challenge of continuing the team's development. “The club management valued me and I am looking forward to the tasks ahead,” said Steffen.
The perspective for the new season
Last season, Werder Bremen, under the leadership of Ole Werner, missed out on European qualification, finishing 13th, 9th and 8th in the last three Bundesliga seasons since returning to the top flight. Steffen has the opportunity to start fully preparing for the new season. Werder Bremen's first competitive game in the 2025/26 season will take place in the DFB Cup between August 15th and 18th, followed by the start of the season in the Bundesliga a week later.
Expectations for Horst Steffen are high and Werder Bremen fans are hoping for a positive turnaround in the coming season.
