Völklingen in transition: Lecture on the city's history from 1850 to 1918

Völklingen is preparing for an informative lecture about his own history. On Thursday, November 6, 2025, the lecture “Growth and Urbanization of Völklingen 1850–1918” will take place in the ballroom of the Old Town Hall. The event starts at 6 p.m. and admission is free. City archivist Dr. Michael Röhrig takes you through the changes that Völklingen went through during these decades.

The lecture will focus on the profound changes that led Völklingen from a rural location to a rapidly growing industrial community. This growth was decisively driven by industrialization, particularly in the mining industry. The number of inhabitants rose rapidly, which not only resulted in a significant demographic change, but also fundamentally changed the townscape.

Structural developments and infrastructure

The focus is on the new streets, residential buildings, schools, administrative buildings, railway systems and supply infrastructure that have significantly shaped the appearance of Völklingen. These developments laid the foundation for the transition to a city. It is remarkable how these changes affected the quality of life of the residents and permanently changed social structures.

Those interested can register via the Völklingen Adult Education Center online, by email or by telephone. The lecture offers a unique opportunity to understand the history of the city in more depth from the perspective of an expert and to deal with local historical development.

Invitation to participate

The event is aimed at all citizens and history buffs who would like to learn more about the urban development of Völklingen. The reference to local developments from 1850 to 1918 promises exciting insights and a stimulating discussion.

Völklingen has already been a place of change in the past, and many of these developments can still be felt today. The lecture by Dr. Michael Röhrig will emphasize how much industrial development contributes to Völklingen's modern identity and how deeply rooted this history is in the community.
