Crisis management in Völklingen: Managing Director Adolph dismissed!

There has been an unexpected change in management at the SHG Clinics in Völklingen. Oliver Adolph, who had been responsible for the clinic since his appointment as administrative director in January 2024 and later managing director in February 2025, was removed in a decision by the supervisory board that was made unanimously on Friday morning. Adolph remains managing director, but swaps his responsibility with Bernd Mege for the Völklingen and Saarbrücken-Sonnenberg clinics.

Since Adolph took office, two chief physicians have left the SHG Clinics in Völklingen. These managers had previously held senior positions at the Saarland University Hospital in Homburg for many years and were hired with the aim of further developing the SHG clinics as an academic teaching hospital of the Saarland University Hospital. The departure of these senior physicians could ring alarm bells, especially considering that ten senior physicians have already resigned this year, indicating a poor working atmosphere.

Criticism of Adolph's leadership style

The decision to dismiss Adolph was influenced, among other things, by criticism of his tone and demeanor. Nurses had already submitted a petition at the beginning of the year, and there were various written complaints to the board from cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and residents. The Verdi union has welcomed the dismissal and is calling for rapid changes in the management of the clinics.

The supervisory board hopes that the restructuring will result in a relaxation of the atmosphere in the hospital's heart center. In addition, mediation with Eisenbeis' previous representative will continue in order to ease internal tensions.

Political reactions

Developments in the heart center were also closely followed at the political level. Health Minister Magnus Jung (SPD) expressed concern about the current circumstances, but welcomed the supervisory board's decision. The left-wing faction in the Saarbrücken regional association sees Adolph's dismissal as an opportunity for the heart center's development prospects, which raises hope for a positive turnaround in the Völklingen SHG clinics.

The situation in the SHG clinics illustrates how important a positive working atmosphere as well as clear and respectful leadership are in order to ensure the motivation and satisfaction of employees. The coming weeks will show whether the change in management brings the hoped-for changes and restores trust in the clinic management.
