On May 31, 2025, the author took a closer look at certain developments in driving school training. He remembers his practical driving test, which he completed at the TÜV in Völklingen in October 1990. Despite driving too fast on the motorway exit, he was able to get his driving license. Now, 35 years later, he pays a visit to the Ludweiler Weidenhof driving school, where he takes a test test with driving student Vanessa Petzke.
Vanessa is about to take her exam. Driving instructor Torsten Weidenhof, who has been running the driving school for 25 years and whose foundation was laid by his father in 1959, simulates a realistic test situation for the young drivers.
Modern driving school methods

During the test test, which begins with a safety check of the vehicle, Vanessa successfully opens the oil dipstick and the containers for windshield washer fluid and coolant. Communication during the exam is kept to a minimum so as not to disrupt concentration.
The minimum tread depth of the tires is 1.6 millimeters and the smartphone remains off-limits during the driving lesson. A small mistake, like forgetting to use a turn signal, carries fewer penalties, while major infractions like running a red light can have serious consequences. Torsten Weidenhof did not have to intervene, suggesting that Vanessa might have passed the test. She is satisfied with the patience and support of her instructor and hopes for a successful exam.
Driving schools in comparison
In contrast to the traditional driving schools in Germany, such as the Ludweiler Driving School Weidenhof, there are also modern approaches in other countries, for example in Riga. The driving school specializes in providing convenient and transparent training and operates throughout Latvia. This shows how different the training opportunities for driving students can be in Europe.
