E-bike accident in Kitzbühel: 76-year-old falls after colliding with golf cart
On June 18, 2025, an accident occurred between an e-golf cart and an e-bike in Reith near Kitzbühel. The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. in the intersection of the Hennleiten cycle path and the Golfweg-Schwarzsee. A 64-year-old German citizen who was driving the golf cart ran into the path of the 76-year-old Dutch e-bike driver as he entered the intersection. She was coming from the direction of Kirchberg and was driving past the bike path when she was frightened by the golf cart and fell.
The 76-year-old's injuries were initially classified as unspecified. After initial treatment at the scene of the accident, she was flown in an emergency helicopter to the district hospital in St. Johann in Tirol. The Austrian authorities have asked the public for patience as they investigate the accident. The press release of the Tyrol Police was released the same day at 8:38 p.m.
Increasing number of accidents among cyclists
The incident in Reith near Kitzbühel is not an isolated case. As current statistics show, the number of accidents involving cyclists in Austria has increased by 69 percent since 2013. The number of cyclists involved in accidents rose from 6,375 in 2013 to 10,745 in 2022. What is particularly worrying is that 41 cyclists lost their lives in 2023, 17 of them on e-bikes.
Sales of bicycles and especially e-bikes have increased significantly, by 33% and 470% respectively. However, this increase is accompanied by a 149% increase in solo accidents and a 34% increase in collision accidents. The main causes of accidents include poor adherence to rules and a lack of driving skills among cyclists. ÖAMTC reports that 77% of all bicycle accidents are not related to the speed limit.
Necessary measures to improve security
Various measures have been proposed to increase cycling safety. This includes improving driving skills through special courses for e-bike riders as well as increased monitoring of rule compliance and the use of alcohol and drugs. Raising awareness, especially with regard to helmet wearing ethics and rule compliance, is also an important factor in preventing future accidents.
The combination of inadequate infrastructure, less driving experience and technical problems also contribute to the worrying trend in accidents. Current developments make it clear that both cyclists and other road users are required to do their part to ensure road safety.
