Drama on Galenstock: Climber from Zurich falls fatally!

A tragic incident occurred on Galenstock on Sunday morning when a 58-year-old climber from Zurich had an accident during a climb. According to the report by Tagblatt The man was part of a group of four that climbed over the southeast spur towards the summit. At around 8:15 a.m. at the beginning of the climbing section, he lost his balance and fell about five meters over a ledge. He then slid another ten meters across a steep snowfield and sustained serious injuries.

The rescue workers were immediately alerted. Rega, a specialist from Alpine Rescue Switzerland and the Alpine task force of the Uri cantonal police were involved in the operation. The injured climber received medical care at the scene of the accident before being flown by helicopter to a hospital outside the canton.

Mountain rescues under difficult conditions

Unfortunately, such accidents are not an isolated case in the Alpine region. On the same weekend, two alpinists had to be rescued from a rockfall on the Großglockner, reports crown. The two Czechs got into trouble in the mountains due to difficult weather conditions and spent two nights in an emergency shelter in the Glockner bivouac at an altitude of 3,205 meters. A helicopter rescue was not possible due to the strong winds in the previous days.

On Tuesday morning, the mountain rescue service made another attempt to rescue the two alpinists. This one was successful; the climbers were rescued by helicopter using rope. One of the alpinists had injuries to his shoulder, while the other suffered a wound to his shin. Both were flown to the Lienz district hospital with the Christophorus 7 rescue helicopter.

The challenges in alpine terrain require the utmost caution and preparation. The incident on Galenstock and the rescue operation on the Großglockner illustrate the risks associated with mountaineering. These events should encourage climbers to carefully consider existing safety precautions and weather conditions to minimize the risk of accidents.
