Cologne in fear: 20,500 people evacuated because of bombs!
On June 4, 2025, disturbing discoveries were made in Cologne that have a remarkable impact on the city and its residents. Three unexploded bombs from the Second World War were found in Deutz, including two American bombs of 20 hundredweight each and one of 10 hundredweight, each equipped with impact detonators. These discoveries led to extensive evacuation operations, the largest since the end of the Second World War.
The Düsseldorf district government's explosive ordnance disposal service plans to defuse the unexploded bombs on Wednesday, June 4th. The danger area will be closed and evacuated within a radius of 1,000 meters from 8 a.m. An estimated 20,500 people will have to leave their homes and jobs, which will lead to significant restrictions on rail and local transport.
Evacuation measures and their effects
Among the facilities affected are the Eduardus Hospital, several retirement homes, the Cologne Messe/Deutz train station and Cologne transport company (KVB) stops on lines 1, 7 and 9. Large companies, including the trade fair, RTL, HDI Versicherung, the LANXESS arena, the Musical Dome, the Philharmonic as well as numerous museum facilities and a large part of the city administration are also affected.
In order to offer support to the evacuated people, two contact points will be set up. The contact point for those on the right bank of the Rhine is in exhibition hall 10.1, while for those on the left bank the Humboldtstraße vocational college, Pearlgraben 101 branch, is intended. Both centers will also open at 8 a.m. and shuttle service will be available to facilitate evacuation.
Public information and measures
The city of Cologne has pointed out that further information will be provided via local media such as Radio Cologne, WDR as well as the Cologne transport company and other affected transport companies. The need for such a large-scale evacuation is reflected in the seriousness of the danger posed by the bombs found. The people of Cologne must now prepare for uncertain times while the authorities take the necessary steps to bring the situation under control.
The special security measures and support for affected citizens demonstrate the city administration's priority regarding the safety of residents and visitors to the city. The strategy of providing public information comprehensively is intended to help reduce fears and uncertainties among the population.
