New Digital Council in Rhineland-Palatinate: Experts for the future on the move!

On March 21, 2025, the Rhineland-Palatinate Digital Council was founded under the leadership of Digitalization Minister Dörte Schall. The aim of the committee, which consists of 17 experts from various areas, is to provide strategic impetus for the country's digital transformation. The Digital Council will meet twice a year and will make recommendations on how to design a future-oriented digital strategy. The co-chair is Professor Katharina Zweig from the RPTU, who also heads the Algorithm Accountability Lab.

The first meeting of the Digital Council focused on current digital policy issues and the needs of citizens. In her speech, Minister Schall pointed out that digital transformation should serve society and should not be misused to ruthlessly cut jobs or spread misinformation. The members of the Digital Council are experts from various sectors, including education, science, business, media, trade unions and agriculture.

Criticism of the cast

However, the composition of the committee is not without controversy. The spokesman for the CDU parliamentary group, Peter Moskopp, expressed concerns about the lack of representation of business representatives in the Digital Council. He called for more transparency regarding the selection criteria for members. Despite this criticism, the Digital Council emphasizes its diversity and the different focuses of the experts.

The members of the new Digital Council include Miriam Anders from the Museumsverband Rheinland-Pfalz e.V., Prof. Dr.-Ing. André Brinkmann from the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and Dr. Marc Jan Eumann from the Rhineland-Palatinate Media Authority, to name just a few. This combination of specialist knowledge and experience is intended not only to discuss current challenges in digital policy, but also to record ideas and impulses for the varied digital ministerial conference and also to record the expectations of the new federal government.

The founding of the Digital Council represents a significant step towards a more strategic approach to digitalization in Rhineland-Palatinate. This committee is intended to discuss central topics of digitalization and actively shape the country's digital future in order to put people's needs at the center of digital transformation.
