Heat wave hits Rhineland-Palatinate: storms and thunderstorms are threatening!
Rhineland-Palatinate is facing a change in the weather that will bring both summer temperatures and storms. Today, July 18, 2025, temperatures of up to 31 degrees Celsius are expected. However, the heatwave currently gripping the state could soon be interrupted by thunderstorms and showers, particularly in the southwest, where heavier rainfall and squalls are likely. This weather situation is dampening the summer mood and causing concern for people in the region. Mercury reports that weather experts are warning of possible storms.
Although there were no severe thunderstorms in Rhineland-Palatinate on Sunday, there is still no reason to give the all-clear. Weather experts note that the mid-summer temperatures that were experienced on Saturday with up to 36 degrees in Koblenz and Worms show signs of changeable weather. In Saarbrücken-Burbach the highest temperature of the year was measured this weekend at 36.2 degrees. However, these hot temperatures may not last long as Tuesday is forecast to bring similar temperatures around 30 degrees. SWR added that some showers and thunderstorms could occur in the north of Rhineland-Palatinate on Monday.
Severe weather warning and risk of forest fires
The tense weather situation is also accompanied by an increased risk of forest fires. The current warning level for the region was reduced from level 4 on Monday, but forecasters expect an increase by midweek. The German Weather Service (DWD) has already informed the population of the high susceptibility of grass areas to inflammation. At the same time, the DWD warns of strong to stormy gusts, especially in the Taunus and Westerwald. These weather phenomena can be particularly dangerous because they can occur together with the high summer temperatures. SWR reports on the risks that this combination entails.
Overall, the weather forecast for Rhineland-Palatinate remains tense and citizens are urged to keep up to date with developments as the weather remains moody and a transition from heat to severe weather could be imminent.
