Health for teachers: Rhineland-Palatinate sets new standards!
The 5th Rhineland-Palatinate School Health Day took place on October 29, 2025. Under the motto “Strengthening health in schools – strategies and concepts”, teachers and various actors in school life discussed the essential aspects of health in the school system. The event was organized by the Ministry of Education of Rhineland-Palatinate in collaboration with the Institute for Teacher Health (IfL) at the Mainz University Medical Center.
The specialist day covered numerous important topics, including company integration management, risk assessments, occupational health prevention as well as aspects of mental health and exercise. Education Minister Sven Teuber emphasized in his opening speech: “Healthy teachers are the basis of healthy schools.” This shows the event's clear focus on staff health, which is seen as essential to the well-being of students.
Topics and target groups
The target group of the event included teachers and everyone involved in school life. Given the challenges schools face, the importance of health was emphasized not only by Minister Teuber, but also by Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Dipl.-Ing. Stephan Letzel highlighted. He explained that health is an important prerequisite for education, highlighting the urgent need for initiatives to promote teacher health.
The Institute for Teacher Health, which was founded in 2011, specializes in health promotion and prevention. It works closely with various partners, including the Rhineland-Palatinate Accident Insurance Fund, the State Pedagogical Institute and health authorities, to support teachers' ability to work and well-being.
Health in the American language
Interestingly, the term “health” also has a historical dimension in American language. Originally used in the United States between 1882 and 1918, “health” was first understood as a toast or greeting before becoming popular as a response to sneezing. This development can be traced back to three early mentions that focus on the doctor Anton Reclam from Leipzig. His reports in the magazine “Gesundheit” contributed to the spread of the term.
A notable example is the use of the term in articles and poems dating back to the 1890s. Although the expression was disliked during the First World War due to anti-German sentiments, it quickly came back into use after the war, especially as a greeting after a sneeze, although this use as a friendly toast faded into the background after the Second World War.
Bicycles and trends in online retail
Finally, the discussion about health promotion and the importance of hobbies such as cycling can be viewed in a broader context. Various bicycles have recently been offered in online forums such as bike forums that underline the interest in sport and exercise. An example is a 1989 Pinarello Montello frame that sells for $150. Such hobbies can also contribute to physical and mental health.
The connection between education, health and hobbies reflects current efforts to raise awareness of holistic health in society. Whether in schools or through sporting activities – the focus on health remains central.
