The first construction work on the new bridge in Neudorf begins despite the explosion in costs!

In Neudorf, Luxembourg, the first signs of construction of a new bridge can be seen that will connect the districts of Cents and Weimerskirch. Construction work has already begun and important decisions about temporary traffic regulations have been made by the local council. Among other things, it was agreed that parking cars between numbers 134 and 152 is prohibited. Pedestrian access will also be restricted to certain areas as required by the contractor to ensure safety during construction.

The cost of this major infrastructure project now stands at €40.1 million, which represents a significant cost increase compared to the original cost estimate of €24.1 million. This increase is primarily due to the increased steel prices. The municipal council of the city of Luxembourg had already voted on this cost explosion in October 2024. An application for “recours en annulation” was submitted to the administrative court in the spring by an interest group and 48 private individuals, but construction work can continue regardless of the outcome of this application.

Details about the construction of the bridge

The bridge will be 200 meters long and 6 meters wide, with 4.5 meters usable. The highest point of the pillar will be 71.5 meters. The design for the bridge comes from the renowned architects Steinmetzdemeyer. Access to the bridge is via Rue Tawioun in Cents and via Rue des Bleuets in Weimershof. A lift next to the pillar with a 60 meter elevator shaft will also be part of the project.

Annual maintenance costs of around 162,000 euros were planned for ongoing operations. The construction period is scheduled to take a total of 551 working days and completion is expected by spring 2028 at the latest.

Cost explosion for bridge projects in Germany

To avoid the risk of litigation, an additional 330,000 euros are required for lead remediation and further testing. Residents are not involved in the development costs, which is a relief for them in the current situation. When renovating the Versebrücke in Lüdenscheid, costs also exploded and rose from the original 255,000 to 404,000 euros - an increase of 58 percent, due to a lack of bidders and more extensive services.

Both projects are an impressive example of how construction costs for important infrastructure in Europe can change. The development in Neudorf is just beginning, while the situation in Lüdenscheid is already acute. These bridge renovations highlight the challenges facing many cities in both Luxembourg and Germany.
