Forest fire at Lutwinus Chapel: Police are investigating arson!

In the early morning of July 6, 2025, there was a fire in the forest area near the Lutwinus Chapel in Mettlach, in which several trees were ablaze. The Mettlach volunteer fire department was alerted and immediately extinguished the fire to prevent the fire from spreading further. Thanks to the quick intervention of the emergency services, something worse was prevented.

During the extinguishing work, a fire was discovered on a park bench, which may be responsible for the fire. The Merzig police station then started an investigation into negligent arson and is asking the public for help. Witnesses are asked to call 06861/7040.

Open fire warning

Given the current weather situation, the police are warning about the dangers of open fires in the forest. In particular, the public is asked to refrain from throwing away cigarette butts as they can easily start fires in dry and hot weather. Investigators are taking the situation seriously and are therefore calling on citizens to be particularly careful.

The fire brigade's quick response and the measures taken show how important it is to act responsibly in the current weather. The well-founded investigations are intended to provide a clear explanation of what happened to the fire in order to prevent further incidents of this type.
