SSC Freisen: Drama in the tiebreak – tension and fight against Wiesbaden!
The 2nd women's volleyball league is in full swing and the SSC Freisen team continues to fight for the first points of the season. After four games played, the team is in last place in the table, as so far there has only been one win and three narrow defeats in the tiebreak, as volleyballer.de reports.
In the last game, which was played against VC Wiesbaden 2 in the Bruchwaldhalle, SSC Freisen played without their middle blocker Kaya Young. This absence turned out to be disadvantageous, as the team around coach Dirk Sauermann had great difficulty asserting itself. In front of around 200 spectators, the team lost the first set 15:25. Nevertheless, they showed an impressive comeback in the second set and won it 25:20, with Monika Gorzka delivering an outstanding performance.
Exciting game with close decisions
The third set was again a challenge for Freisen, who lost 16:25. In set four, however, the players showed their resilience: with important points from Leonie Dewes, they fought back and won it 25:20. In the decisive tiebreak, the score was initially equal at 8:8, before Wiesbaden pulled away to 11:8 and ultimately won the set. The referee showed a confident performance. In the future, Freisen's team will have to act more concentrated, especially in crunch time in the fifth set, in order to win the close games.
Overall, the Freisen women have not yet won a game. Their three points only come from narrow 2:3 defeats, as volleyball-bundesliga.de adds. Coach Dirk Sauermann described the current squad as a “lucky bag” as the team was almost completely rebuilt compared to last season. Players from various countries, including Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Luxembourg, Benin and the USA, make up the current team. This uncertainty in the lineup makes it difficult to deliver a consistently successful performance.
A look at volleyball in Germany
Volleyball is enjoying growing popularity in Germany, both as a recreational and competitive sport. The German Volleyball Association (DVV) reported around 436,000 members in 2024, which means an increase of 6.4 percent compared to the previous year. What is particularly noteworthy is that volleyball is the only team sport in which more women (222,170) than men (214,100) are organized in the association, as unitedvolleys.de reports.
School volleyball is also on the rise, with over 100,000 students taking part in the Youth Training for the Olympics competition in the 2023-24 school year. The German women's national team reached 6th place at the 2023 European Volleyball Championship, which illustrates the improvement in performance compared to international standards.
On the next match day, SSC Freisen will face Black Forest Volleys Offenburg, who are currently in second place with five wins from six games. The challenge will be big, but the team could benefit from their experience from previous close games.
