Debut for young talents: German women's basketball team on course for the European Championships!

The German Basketball Federation (DBB) has announced the final European Championship squad of German women's basketball players for the upcoming European Championships. How Sports1 Reportedly, Leonie Fiebich from the New York Liberty and Luisa Geiselsöder from the Dallas Wings are joining the national team. This decision came just four days before the first game of the European Championship, which will take place in Hamburg from June 18th to 29th.

The announcement of the squad comes at a difficult time as the team is faced with numerous injuries and sporting setbacks. Captain Marie Gülich has torn a cruciate ligament, while Alina Hartmann is suffering from a meniscus injury. Nyara Sabally has canceled due to persistent knee problems and the oldest German basketball player Satou Sabally has also decided to forego the European Championships in order to concentrate on her new WNBA club Phoenix Mercury. There were also two friendly defeats against Belgium, each of which was lost by more than 30 points.

The European Championship squad in detail

Coach Lisa Thomaidis had to make a few decisions before the European Championships, including removing Emma Eichmeyer, Johanna Klug and Anna Lappenküper from the squad. The squad for the European Championship is as follows:

  • Alexis Peterson (Villeneuve d’Ascq/Frankreich)
  • Alexandra Wilke (Rutronik Stars Keltern 49)
  • Hilke Feldrappe (Columbia University/USA)
  • Jennifer Crowder (Limonta Sport Costa Masagna/Italien)
  • Leonie Fiebich (New York Liberty/USA)
  • Luisa Geiselsöder (Dallas Wings/USA)
  • Emma Eichmeyer (Saarlouis Royals)
  • Frieda Bühner (Movistar Estudiantes/Spanien)
  • Emily Bessoir (Lointek Gernika Bizkaia/Spanien)
  • Clara Bielefeld (Texas Christian University/USA)
  • Romy Bär (Syntainics MBS 99)
  • Jessika Schiffer (Saarlouis Royals)

The team will face strong opponents such as Sweden, Spain and Great Britain in the group stage before the final round takes place in Piraeus, Greece. This marks the German women's national team's first participation in the European Championship in twelve years, and expectations are correspondingly high.

The focus is particularly on talented players such as Emily Bessoir and Lina Sontag, who are making their debut for the senior national team. The games will be broadcast live and free of charge on Magenta Sport, giving fans an excellent opportunity to support their team. Basketball.de adds that Svenja Brunckhorst and Sonja Greinacher were unavailable in the friendly matches due to their commitments with the 3×3 national team, which further challenges the team.
