Shocking accident on S6: Driver escapes with drugs and a weapon in the car!

On June 7, 2025, a serious traffic accident occurred on the Semmering Expressway (S6) near Neunkirchen. A 35-year-old man from the Bruck-Mürzzuschlag district was traveling towards Vienna with his wife and their two small children, aged 2 and 4. While overtaking, there was a serious collision with a vehicle behind, which hit the rear of the family car at high speed.

The violent impact threw the family's vehicle into the ditch, where it crashed into traffic control devices and eventually overturned. All occupants suffered injuries and had to be taken to the Wiener Neustadt University Hospital.

Hit and run and attempted escape

The person who caused the accident, a 40-year-old man from Vienna-Donaustadt, fled the scene of the accident without caring for the injured or calling the police. While escaping, he hit the edge guardrail but continued his journey. He later stopped in a parking lot on the southern motorway near Seebenstein due to a technical defect. Road users informed the police about the damaged vehicle.

A police check revealed that the 40-year-old was driving without a valid driver's license. He also tested positive for addictive substances and medications. The officers found a gas pistol in the vehicle, even though it was banned from using weapons. The man was then reported to the district administration authority and the public prosecutor's office in Wiener Neustadt, as [meinbezirk.at](https://www.meinbezirk.at/neunkirchen/c-lokales/fahrerwandel- Pistole-im-auto-und-drogeneinfluss_a7369690) reports.

Drugs in traffic

The incident highlights an increasingly pressing problem in road traffic: driving under the influence of drugs. According to a dark field study by the Road Safety Board (KFV), around 250,000 people in Austria drove a vehicle under the influence of drugs in 2023. Nevertheless, there were only 8,676 reports of drug driving, which represents just about 3% of the estimated cases. This means that a large proportion of impaired drivers remain undetected, which is a cause for concern.

There is a clear need for action to improve drug detection. The KFV study suggests implementing appropriate devices and processes to take drug drivers out of circulation more efficiently. The situation requires a rethink and measures, inspired by European models, to ensure safety on the roads, as kfv.at analyzes.
