Eppelborn's new beginning as a coach: drama in the 3:5 against Kaiserslautern II!
On Saturday, November 17th, 2025, FV Eppelborn experienced an exciting game against 1. FC Kaiserslautern II, which ended 3-5. Despite the setback, Eppelborn remains bottom of the table in the Oberliga Rheinland-Pfalz/Saar, a league that represents the fifth tier in the German football league system. This league is known for its diversity, as it consists of several regional leagues that have existed since the introduction of the Bundesliga in 1963 and have existed in various forms since the post-war period. According to Wikipedia's Oberliga page), 14 upper leagues have been established in Germany, based on different federal states and regions.
The game started promisingly for Eppelborn. Jonas Sträßer opened the game in the 10th minute with a goal to make it 1-0. However, things quickly took a turn when Vladislav Fadeev equalized from the penalty spot just five minutes later. The guests from Kaiserslautern took advantage of the uncertainty and moved ahead to 4-1 by the 45th minute with goals from Melvin Wiesnet and Owen Gibs, who scored twice. Kaiserslautern played outnumbered from the 25th minute onwards after Ivan Smiljanic was sent off for an emergency stop. However, Eppelborn was able to reduce the score to 2:4 shortly before half-time with a header from Jonas Pfeiffer.
Berger and the hope for improvement
Jan Berger, the new coach of FV Eppelborn, was optimistic after the game. He highlighted the importance of presence in duels and possession and emphasized that his team's performance provides a basis for future games. Despite the 14 defeats of the season that Eppelborn currently has, Berger wants to give it his all again in the remaining three games before the winter break. “Saarbrücker Zeitung” reports that Eppelborn has to play against FC Cosmos Koblenz next November 22nd.
Nevertheless, the challenge in the top league remains immense, especially for a club that is now playing several games at the bottom. Meanwhile, FC Hertha Wiesbach, who beat FC Emmelshausen-Karbach 4-3, can be proud of their performance and have moved up to seventh place in the table with 28 points. Hertha Wiesbach is therefore also considered the best Saar club in the Oberliga.
The Oberliga Rheinland-Pfalz/Saar, in which both Eppelborn and Hertha Wiesbach play, was founded in 1978 and has been called that since 2012, having previously been known as the Oberliga Südwest. The goal of every club is to get promoted to the regional league, which is directly below the 3rd league and promises significantly more attention and competitiveness than the upper league can offer.
For FV Eppelborn it is now a matter of using the next games to free themselves from the lower table region and get to know the mode of the upper league. The combination of sporting ambition and the experiences of the past matchdays could be crucial for a positive turnaround in the current season.
