Common strength: Völklingen discusses inclusion for refugees!

On May 20, 2025, the second regional conference of the GLEICH project took place in Völklingen, in which Leila Serghini, coordinator of tomorrow e.V., took part. The conference was held on the premises of Haus Afrika e.V., a project location that promotes the integration and participation of migrants. Among the participants were southern partner organizations such as Moin e.V. and BiM e.V., which provided valuable impulses and contributions.

The day was characterized by intensive discussions and a joint reflection on the contribution of migrant organizations to creating an inclusive urban society. Particular attention was paid to the situation of socially vulnerable refugees. Mayor Stephan Tautz and Dr. Ralf Beil, Managing Director of the Völklinger Hütte World Heritage Site, actively participated in the discussions and discussed both challenges and good practice examples.

Important impressions and highlights

A special highlight of the conference was the visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Völklinger Hütte and the exhibition “The True Size Of Africa”. These experiences helped to make the participants understand the importance of intercultural connections and raise awareness of integrative approaches. In her remarks, Serghini highlighted the expertise, commitment and solidarity within the community.

The exchange of ideas and experiences spanned the entire day and important topics were openly addressed. The contributions ranged from participants from various cities, including Saarbrücken, Munich, Nuremberg and Reutlingen. A detailed follow-up report and a digital exchange forum will be published in the near future to continue the discussion.

Thanks and outlook

A special thank you went to all participants, guests, coordinators and volunteers who contributed to the success of the event. In particular, Haus Afrika e.V. was thanked for its excellent hospitality. This conference is part of a larger integration concept in Völklingen that aims to promote the participation of migrants and their organizations in urban society. Further information about these initiatives can be found in the Völklingen Integration Concept.
