Seniors enjoy a trip to the Saar loop: a day full of experiences!
On August 28, 2025, the AWO Rhein-Neckar organized a trip to the picturesque Saar loop for 50 seniors. The excursion was part of the “Safe and Protected in Old Age” project and belonged to the “Kaffeeklatsch fer umme” group, which is particularly aimed at promoting social exchange between older people. The destination of the trip was the famous Saar loop near Mettlach, the most famous viewing point in the border triangle of Germany, Luxembourg and France.
The barrier-free route also enabled participants who use walkers to access the viewing platform. From there, the seniors could enjoy a wonderful panoramic view over Saarland's landmark, the Saar river loop.
Culinary and cultural experiences
After the impressive view, the participants returned to the beer garden of the Abbey Brewery in Mettlach, where they were able to enjoy a traditional Saarland meal. The afternoon offered another highlight: a boat trip on the passenger ship “Maria Croon”, which offered 50 previously reserved seats. During the boat trip, the guests passed through a lock with a height difference of eleven meters, which was an exciting experience for many.
After the boat trip, the seniors took a walk through the abbey park of the former Benedictine abbey in Mettlach, which has been the headquarters of Villeroy & Boch for over 200 years. The park not only offers a quiet atmosphere, but also a modern showroom that introduces visitors to the company's history and products.
Social participation and support
In the evening, the participants returned to Weinheim and looked back gratefully on a varied and enriching day. Organizer Brigitte Bell emphasized the importance of the donations needed to carry out such trips. The goal of AWO Rhein-Neckar remains to create cultural experiences for older people and to combat loneliness in old age.
The AWO Rhein-Neckar not only gets involved through such excursions, but also offers regular senior meetings in meeting places that are open to everyone. She also organizes day trips and sightseeing in most communities in the Rhine-Neckar district. Other offerings include a “multi-generational house,” “parent/child café,” and a “meal service.” The organization also takes part in community festivals and offers various lectures and cultural events that enrich the social life of the older population ( MRN News, AWO Rhine-Neckar ).
