Amid the intense US-China trade crisis, Donald Trump recently showed his growing frustration in an early morning message on Truth Social. At 2:30 a.m., he expressed his distaste for the negotiating strategies of China's President Xi Jinping, whom he describes as difficult and unaccommodating despite positive past relations. The trade conflict between the two nations has escalated significantly as both sides have already imposed massive tariffs on each other's products. Loud Irish Star Trump increased tariffs against China due to a “lack of respect” for global markets.
The White House has suggested that Trump and Xi may speak this week to defuse the tense situation. However, U.S. Treasurer Scott Bessent noted that trade talks are “a little stalled” and the two leaders have a crucial role to play in reviving those talks. It remains to be seen whether the proposed conference call between Trump and Xi, which was hinted at by an unconfirmed report from a White House, will actually materialize.
Remaining tensions
Both countries blame each other for violating a trade agreement signed on May 12 that granted a 90-day ceasefire on tariffs. While the US has imposed a total of 145% tariffs on Chinese goods, China has responded with 125% on US products. This shows the extent of economic and political tensions between the world's two leading economies. The BBC reported that the US responded immediately to accusations from China that it was violating the agreement.
As part of these conflicts, the US government has also revoked visas for Chinese students in the USA, which has led to considerable resentment in China. China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi described the measures as "groundless" and harmful to his country's rights and interests. The People's Republic has also demanded that the USA “reach out to China” and return relations to a positive course.
Complex trading dynamics
Trump has called the tariffs imposed by his administration "devastating" for China and claimed that he made a "quick deal" to ease the situation. It is important to note that despite the alleged agreement on tariffs, simply reducing tariffs from 145% to 30% on US goods and from 125% to 10% on Chinese goods does not resolve underlying tensions. Analysts point out that trade talks may only make progress if the US government does not present any unpleasant surprises during a possible telephone call.
An interesting point in the ongoing discussion is the pause in US sales of semiconductor technologies and other machinery to China. The move is seen as part of efforts to limit China's access to advanced technology. China's restrictions on the export of rare earths were also sharply criticized by the USA, which further increased tensions.
Overall, the situation between America and China remains tense as both sides try hard to protect their economic interests. The coming days could be crucial in determining whether Trump and Xi will be able to find a solution or whether the crisis will continue to worsen.
