Fascinating concert with Bolshoi Don Cossacks in the Korneuburg town hall!
A special event will take place in the Great Meeting Room of Korneuburg Town Hall on Thursday, September 11th at 7 p.m.: A multimedia concert show with the Bolshoi Don Cossacks and the Kaiserwalzer Orchestra. The reason for the concert is the 200th birthday of the famous composer Johann Strauss. The Bolshoi Don Cossacks, a well-known men's choir, have been performing for over 40 years and consist exclusively of opera soloists, under the direction of Petja Houdjakov, who re-formed the choir in 1979/80 after Serge Jaroff's illness. The name "Bolshoi" means "big" and refers to the number of members as well as the quality of the musical performances, which includes both high tenor voices and deep basses. The program promises a musical journey into the “Cossack” tradition.
The Bolshoi Don Cossacks are deeply rooted in cultural history and contribute to people's connection and relaxation with their performances. The songs in particular reflect the longings and needs of the people and have enjoyed great popularity, particularly among German-speaking audiences. The choir plans to properly celebrate its 100th anniversary, which is coming up in 2025, with special concerts.
Cultural highlights and other events
In addition to the concert in Korneuburg, the men's choir is planning a series of performances in autumn/winter 2024/25. A highlight of this year's season is the concert on Whit Monday in the collegiate church in Zwettl, where the choir's soloists traditionally present rich musical traditions. An interesting project that was recently realized is “Johann Strauss in St. Petersburg”, which was broadcast on TV21 Austria and is a homage to the Viennese composer.
On September 23, 2024, an exhibition about Petja Houdjakov's life's work will open on the occasion of his 90th birthday in the Russian House in Vienna. This includes materials about the choir's diverse performances and projects and was compiled from archives and private collections. At the exhibition there will also be the opportunity to get to know the important choir conductor and his soloists over a drink.
The Bolshoi Don Cossacks recently released a new double CD entitled “Singing for Life,” which documents the choir’s impressive musical range. It shows the choir's ability to build a musical bridge between East and West by including not only Russian and Ukrainian tunes, but also sacred Orthodox songs in their program.
