Saarbrücken celebrates diversity: Biodiversity Day at Halberg!

On May 20, 2025, the Saarländischer Rundfunk and the organization DELATTINIA invite you to the Saarland “Biodiversity Day” at Halberg. The motto of the event is “Know species – experience nature – discover its diversity” and the aim is to document the biological diversity of the Halberg. Martin Grasmück, the director of Saarland Radio, highlights the Halberg as a valuable piece of nature in Saarbrücken.

The Halberg, known for its forested hilltops and its historical significance as the headquarters of the Saarland Broadcasting Corporation, offers the perfect backdrop for this event. Since 2002, Biodiversity Day has been organized by DELATTINIA, an association of volunteer naturalists that also runs the Saarland Academy for Species Knowledge.

Diverse program

The program is aimed at professionals as well as families, children and those interested in nature and includes various events over the entire weekend:

  • Freitag, 13. Juni: Expertenabend mit öffentlicher Führung, Exkursionen zur Fledermaus-Bestimmung und Nachtfalterfauna von 21.30 Uhr bis 23.30 Uhr.
  • Samstag, 14.

These events are intended to explore the biodiversity of the Halberg and create awareness of nature conservation. The historic Halberg circular route, a newly designed 3.5 km long path with 19 information boards, is also particularly highlighted.

Red lists and biodiversity in Saarland

In the context of “Biodiversity Day”, the recent publication of the Red List for Saarland plays a central role. This summarizes the knowledge about endangered species and includes almost 1,000 pages with information on more than 11,000 animal, plant and fungal species. Nearly 100 species specialists contributed to this comprehensive survey. According to delattinia.de, the focus is not only on recording but also on protecting these species, a third of which are endangered or already extinct.

The Red List consists of two volumes covering both flora and fauna. While one volume offers information on vascular plants, mosses and fungi, the other deals with various animal groups, from bats to wild bees. The volumes are available through the Ministry of the Environment or DELATTINIA.

The event at Halberg is not only an opportunity to experience the beauty and diversity of nature, but also an important platform to provide information about the challenges and protection of our environment. The participation and commitment of visitors takes a step towards awareness and responsibility for nature.
