Equality in focus: DGB conference brings a breath of fresh air to Mainz!
On June 14, 2025, the 6th Ordinary District Women's Conference of the DGB Rhineland-Palatinate / Saarland took place in the ZDF casino building in Mainz. This year's motto was “Added Value – Equality”, which focuses on the women's policy priorities in the coming years. This conference is held every four years and aims to represent the interests of almost 120,000 female members of the DGB and to promote equality for women in society.
Maria Leurs, the DGB district women's secretary, emphasized in her speech the urgency of a fair distribution of time, money and power. She also pointed out the ongoing discrimination against women in the world of work, which often leads to poverty in old age and social exclusion. This problem is crucial in order to improve the social and economic conditions for women, which is also anchored in the model of the trade union equality policy, which aims to ensure the independent existence of women, as dgb.de reports.
Political support
Important political voices were also heard during the conference. Katharina Binz, the Rhineland-Palatinate Minister for Family, Women, Culture and Integration, as well as Bettina Altesleben, State Secretary in the Saarland Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs, Women and Health, and Timo Ahr, deputy DGB district chairman, spoke greetings that underlined the commitment to equal rights.
The delegates to the conference voted on numerous motions that covered topics corresponding to the union's demands for the future, such as gender-equitable spatial and urban planning as well as increasing the number of places in women's shelters and the compatibility of work and care. These aspects are central to improving the living and working conditions of women and aim to overcome gender inequalities and promote the balance of work and life for everyone.
Compatibility of work and life
The DGB women are committed to promoting partnership in the world of work, which is important right from the start of working life. This is supported by a family policy that takes into account everyone's needs to take responsibility for one another. The challenges of improving working and living conditions in companies, administrations, districts and cities are the focus of the measure in order to achieve real equality for men and women.
The contact persons in the Women, Equal Opportunities and Family Policy Department of the DGB are available for further information.
