Small State Games 2025: Luxembourg's athletes ready for Andorra!
The Small State Games (Jeux des petits États d’Europe, JPEE) will take place in Andorra from May 26th to 31st, 2025. This biennial multi-sport event will be held in Andorra for the third time, having previously hosted the Games in 1991 and 2005. Andorra is expecting a total of around 3,000 participants, including 150 to 180 athletes from the host country as well as from seven other countries: Malta, Cyprus, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Montenegro and San Marino.
The JPEE, which first took place in 1984, allows athletes from small European countries to compete against each other in various disciplines. This year there will be competition for medals in a total of 19 different sports, including athletics, basketball and swimming.
Accommodation for athletes
The Hotel Mercure in Andorra la Vella is chosen to accommodate the Luxembourg athletes. According to lessentiel.lu, the hotel offers 136 rooms and serves as a retreat for the athletes and their carers. The logistical organization is in the hands of Marie-Jo Ries, who ensures that all requirements are met.
The athletes will be accommodated in shared rooms, with men and women living separately. Single rooms are available for special needs, such as track and field athletes. In order to avoid problems like those at JPEE 2023 in Malta, a pre-accommodation check was carried out.
Logistical requirements
The demands on the hotel are high: ice, rooms for physiotherapists and doctors, as well as places for confidential discussions must be provided. In addition, an office is required and laundry facilities must be available. These details were clarified in advance to ensure a smooth process.
The Luxembourg delegation numbers 165 athletes, which is a significant number compared to the 13 athletes who will take part in the Paris Olympics. The JPEE's budget is believed to be high, but exact figures have not been published, marking the event as costly.
An event of great importance
The Small State Games not only offer a platform for competitions, but also promote exchange and encounters between athletes from small states. The event has a special meaning for the participating countries as it enables them to present themselves at an international level and to compete in sports. Andorra is therefore the perfect host and will present the 2025 Small State Games in a setting that meets the high expectations of the participating nations.
As encamp.ad reports, the volleyball competition will take place in the municipality of Encamp, contributing to the diversification of venues. After all, the event, which will take place over a period of just six days, is a significant highlight in the sporting calendar of the small European states.
