Hidden treasures: Old rope factory in St. Wendel shines again!

It opens on June 27, 2025Old rope factoryin St. Wendel city center opens its doors to the public. The historic building, a stone building from the 18th century, currently houses the architectural firm KAZWO-Architekten. The architects contacted the developers a year ago with the original plan to create student apartments in the building. However, after careful consideration, they decided to undertake a major renovation.

Over the last 40 years the ground floor of the building has been used as a pub, causing significant wear and tear. The rooms were very smoky and had a large bar and games rooms. During the renovation, the thick plaster was removed from the stone walls and the old materials were exposed. The creative reinterpretation of the old pub counter as a kitchen island is now the center of the room.

Special details of the renovation

The architects not only preserved the characteristic stone walls, but also left the steel beams visible. In addition, the old Biedermeier door was preserved and restored by a blacksmith. Anyone interested will have the opportunity to view the door and other details of the redesigned room on June 28th from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. In addition to the Alte Seilerei, several events will take place in the region on this day that celebrate the diversity of architectural changes.

The action on Architecture Day offers guided tours at several locations, including the Saarbrücken-Ost Extended Elementary School and the Kirchberg Education Workshop. The new KiTa building project in Spiesen-Elversberg will also be presented. The events are intended to provide an insight into the development and preservation of historical buildings.

Sustainability through renovation

The focus on renovating historic buildings has increased internationally in recent years. Architects today are increasingly focusing on preserving and modernizing existing structures instead of demolishing them. According to that National Trust for Historic Preservation It takes up to 30 years for new buildings to offset their climate impact. An environmentally friendly renovation uses energy concepts such as solar systems and contemporary insulation to minimize the ecological footprint.

A total of eleven successfully renovated buildings that retain their historic charm are the focus of this development. This trend towards sustainable renovations proves that repurposing is not only possible, but also necessary to check and promote the adaptability of old structures.
