First blue light day in St. Wendel: Experience rescue workers up close!

Last Saturday, May 24, 2025, the district town of St. Wendel's first blue light day took place in Wendelinuspark. The event began at 11 a.m. and had the aim of making the valuable work of the rescue and emergency services in the areas of rescue, fire and disaster control visible. Mayor Peter klar emphasized the importance of this event and emphasized the commitment of the numerous aid organizations that were represented on site. The organizations involved included the police, the German Red Cross (DRK), the fire department, the Technical Relief Agency (THW), the German Life Saving Society (DLRG), the Johanniter and the emergency pastoral care. The Bundeswehr fire brigade was also present to provide a comprehensive overview of the emergency services in the region.

Visitors had the opportunity to find out directly about the work of the various organizations and landed on a variety of technological and practical highlights. These included, among other things, a police drone, a special vehicle for fighting forest fires and a fire station that demonstrated the latest technologies in use. The large emergency vehicles from the THW and the fire department particularly attracted the attention of technology fans. There was also a diving container from the DLRG and an impressive rescue dog team from Johanniter, which impressively demonstrated their skills.

Diverse program for young and old

The blue light day not only offered informative insights into the tasks of the emergency services, but also an extensive children's program. Boys and girls were able to take part in hands-on stations that offered a lot of fun and variety. The water mini golf and the opportunity to provide first aid and carry out fire extinguishing exercises were particularly popular. A highlight for the little visitors was the meet & greet with firefighter Sam, which took place between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Your physical well-being was also taken care of, and various gastronomic offerings invited you to linger. The event ended with a live performance by the band “Searching” from 5 p.m., which made for a successful conclusion. Entry to this diverse day was free, allowing families and technology enthusiasts to have an interesting and entertaining day. Overall, the first blue light day was a complete success and offered both emergency services and visitors a platform to get in touch with each other and exchange ideas.

The first event of its kind showed how important it is to highlight the work of volunteers and full-time workers and to recognize their commitment to the community. It remains to be hoped that Blue Light Day will become a recurring series of events that can attract many more visitors and participants.
