Lana Lynn: Love of reading from California is changing Africa!

The Herald Heroes Foundation called on the community to submit nominations for individuals making notable contributions behind the scenes. Among the nominees is Lana Lynn, the founder and chairwoman of the nonprofit organization Elizabeth's Library, which is a major advocate for education in Africa. One winner will be chosen from five finalists and will receive a $500 prize, a recognition of their tireless dedication.

Lana Lynn's mission is to build libraries and promote literacy programs in poor and rural regions of Africa. Her passion for reading, which she developed in a small town in South Dakota, eventually led her to work in refugee camps and internationally. There she began literacy courses, which from then on formed a central part of her missions around the world.

A key to education

From her original job as a nurse, her path led through refugee programs in Thailand and other countries around the world. Lynn gained valuable experience that strengthened her expertise in humanitarian operations and literacy. Her stay in Malawi was particularly formative, where she met a local pastor who wanted to initiate a literacy program for widows in his community.

Together with her husband, Lynn supported this plan and raised additional funds to build a school for orphans. For her 60th birthday, her friends helped found an educational institution that honored the strong connection to the young Elizabeth, who suffered from an inoperable brain tumor and died before the projects were implemented.

The inspiration behind Elizabeth’s Library

The library was ultimately named in honor of Elizabeth, who struggled with health challenges but never gave up on her dream of becoming a teacher. Her support of the Hope Home Mission in Malawi and the loving way she helped others will never be forgotten. Through the tireless efforts of Lynn and Elizabeth's parents, the library was dedicated in 2012, a significant event that brought together local community leaders and citizens.

Lana Lynn and her organization have sent approximately 20,000 books to Africa in recent years. This used to require expensive postal shipments, but Lynn is now working with shipping company Amezam to secure this important resource. She sees the library as a tool for change and development of communities.

However, the work of Elizabeth’s Library is not limited to providing books. Lynn and her team have also initiated agricultural projects and funded a well in the community, which has improved living standards. Lynn firmly believes that her experiences and faith will lead her to continue to initiate similar projects in additional regions and to inspire others to take action in their own communities.
