Saarland is preparing for the largest sporting event for inclusion!
On June 6, 2025, Special Olympics Germany (SOD) presented the plans for the upcoming Special Olympics National Games Saarland 2026 in a press conference. The event, which is taking place for the first time in Saarland, will take place from June 15th to 20th, 2026 and is touted as the largest sporting event in the region. The official logo was also presented as part of the press conference at the Saar sports campus in Saarbrücken.
The logo is a creative representation of the region and integrates important Saarland landmarks, including the Ludwigskirche, the Saarpolygon and the Völklinger Hütte. It embodies not only the local beauties, but also the values of inclusion and community that are at the heart of the event. The Federal Managing Director of SOD, Sven Albrecht, emphasizes the importance of the decentralized concept, which is intended to promote the inclusion of people with and without disabilities.
Unique competitions and cross-border collaboration
The games promise exciting competitions in a total of 27 sports, which will take place in all districts of Saarland as well as in Forbach, France. A special highlight is the first-ever holding of cross-border swimming competitions, which symbolize togetherness across national borders.
Saarland's Interior Minister Reinhold Jost expressed confidence in the success of the event and emphasized that more than 4,000 athletes and over 2,500 helpers and carers are expected. The opening and closing ceremonies are planned for Saarbrücken and are intended to provide a celebratory setting for this important event.
Inclusive event for everyone
The games' decentralized and inclusive approaches aim to bring people with and without disabilities together and create a common platform. The event is organized by SOD, whose headquarters is in Berlin. Those interested can find further information about the organization on the Special Olympics Germany website, which can be reached at specialolympics.de.
The upcoming Special Olympics National Games represent not only a sporting challenge, but also an opportunity to raise awareness of inclusion and respectful treatment of one another. With the support of the state government and citizens, this festival of inclusion in Saarland will be an unforgettable event.
