Jena: The city with the strictest rule against sidewalk parking!
In Germany there is an increasing problem with illegal parking on sidewalks, which particularly affects pedestrians, especially people with walkers, wheelchairs or strollers. A current survey by German Environmental Aid (DUH) shows that many large cities in Germany are lenient with sidewalk parking. Of the 105 cities surveyed, only 33 do not tolerate sidewalk parking. The strictest regulations were found in the city of Jena, where only a remaining sidewalk width of 50 cm is permitted. For many pedestrians this represents a massive hindrance.
The DUH calls for consistent punishment for sidewalk parking in order to ensure pedestrian traffic. While cities like Berlin, Erfurt and Weimar do not tolerate sidewalk parking, Lübeck has a higher tolerance with up to 90 cm remaining width. Other cities such as Braunschweig, Paderborn and St. Ingbert allow up to one meter of remaining width, while Bottrop, Darmstadt and other cities even tolerate 1.20 meters. Hamburg now requires at least 2.20 meters of remaining sidewalk width.
Changes in the regulation
The problem of sidewalk parking also means that cities such as Göttingen, Magdeburg, Mainz and Aachen are planning changes in 2023 after an initial evaluation of the regulations. Munich, on the other hand, is planning stricter measures against sidewalk parking, but is currently still tolerating it.
