Völklingen is flourishing: Together for more biodiversity!
On May 28, 2025, employees of the Völklingen public utility company, together with representatives of the AG Lebenswertes Völklingen, transformed two tree beds in front of the main entrance into a sustainable flowering meadow. This campaign has the motto “Together for more biodiversity”, which was initiated by Alexander Benzmüller from the AG Lebenswertes Völklingen. The aim of the initiative is to make the city of Völklingen greener and more livable while at the same time increasing awareness of biotopes and the environment.
The previous plants were removed, the garden soil was filled and a meadow specially suitable for bees was sown. This sustainable transformation helps to promote biological diversity and enrich urban spaces with vital green spaces. The campaign highlights the importance of improving urban environmental conditions, which are heavily burdened by road traffic and development gruen-in-die-stadt.de reported.
Joint efforts and future steps
The balance of the campaign not only shows the successes in the green development of the city, but also gives hope for further joint projects to beautify the cityscape. “We plan to continue our commitment to a Völklingen worth living in,” said Benzmüller. In addition to Benzmüller, Jörg Hartmann, Michelle Krob, Mona Ishak and Alexander Klaper were also involved in the campaign. This group of young talents, including trainees and working students from SWVK Holding, exemplifies the commitment within the municipal utility company.
The creation of blue-green infrastructure is not only a central goal of urban development, but also a response to the challenges of climate change. Green spaces offer regeneration spaces for flora and fauna, and a high level of biodiversity is ensured. Future planning should also take into account the demands on climate resilience and adaptability, e.g. B. Future trees can be used that have high drought stress tolerance and low susceptibility to pests.
Such initiatives not only promote biodiversity, but also secure valuable living space for future generations, which impressively demonstrates the shared responsibility for the green future of our cities.
