Bertram Engel: A life for music – new release and reading evening!

On October 3, 2025, 68-year-old Bertram Engel released his new live album entitled “I don’t play with old men”. This album includes twelve songs that Engel has written over the years for well-known artists such as Peter Maffay. The songs' themes are diverse and revolve around love, loneliness, boredom, everyday life, loyalty, friendship and change. Engel, considered one of Germany's best drummers and described by Bruce Springsteen as one of the best in the world, has worked in the music scene for over five decades and toured with the likes of Udo Lindenberg and Peter Maffay.

Last year, Engel performed in the SR 3 “Echt live” concert in Studio 1 on November 11, 2024, where he not only played drums but also sang on the piano. On the album he also shares anecdotes from his impressive career and gives insights into his life in the music business. His autobiography, which is also entitled “I Don't Play with Old Men,” was published in September 2025. In this biography, Engel tells of famous encounters with artists such as Carlos Santana, Joe Cocker, Bruce Springsteen, Robert Palmer and Ringo Starr.
