Reading summer and reading aloud summer: Great reading joy in Landau!

The 18th Rhineland-Palatinate Reading Summer will begin shortly and offers children and young people up to the age of 16 exciting opportunities to read and read aloud. From June 23rd to August 24th, 2025, 220 municipal and church libraries will take part in this reading promotion campaign, including the Landau City Library. Registration for the Reading Summer and Reading Summer programs is already open, so interested families can register early. Participants have the opportunity to borrow current children's and young adult books free of charge and immerse themselves in the world of stories.

In addition to the reading summer, there is a special campaign for the little ones, the reading summer, which also takes place from June 23rd to August 24th. This activity is aimed at daycare children of reading age and includes the borrowing of picture books and reading books as well as various activities that promote reading aloud. The libraries provide club cards that can be used for both the book and the reader. For every book read aloud there is a stamp that is collected on the club card.

Activities and Rewards

The reading summer includes numerous activities, such as reading aloud and drawing a picture of your favorite book, which can be dropped off at the library. Children who have read at least three books and submit a picture will receive a certificate as a reward. One club card per child ends up in the draw for a nationwide competition. You can win prizes through this raffle, including bicycles, Lego sets and book vouchers.

The situation is similar during the reading summer, where participants have to rate the books they have read in order to receive stamps on their club card. Anyone who also reads three books receives a certificate, and schools can positively note their participation on the certificate. There is also a competition here, the main prize of which is a voucher for a two-day stay in Europapark Rust and the Rulantica Water World.

Final event and coordination

The big final event will take place on September 24, 2025 and will be accompanied by author Barbara Rose. The certificates and prizes are presented here, marking a celebratory end to the reading season. These extensive reading promotion campaigns are coordinated by the Rhineland-Palatinate State Library Center. Further information about the programs can be found at vorlese-sommer.de or can be obtained directly from the Landau City Library.

The event “Reading Fun from the Library” is intended not only to promote reading, but also to arouse curiosity, increase vocabulary and increase the ability to concentrate. The reading summer, together with the reading summer, offers an excellent opportunity to sustainably promote children and young people's interest in reading.
