Heat alarm: 34 degrees in Rhineland-Palatinate – How to stay cool and healthy!

A heat wave with temperatures of up to 34 degrees Celsius is expected in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland. The German Weather Service (DWD) speaks of a “small heat wave” that could reach its peak on Friday. These high temperatures place an extreme strain on the human body, which is why particular caution is required now.  n-tv reports that highs of 28 to 32 degrees with sunshine are predicted as early as Thursday.

To be prepared for the heat, experts recommend various protective measures. This includes avoiding direct sunlight and cooling the apartment, for example by closing roller shutters and ventilating early in the morning or late in the evening. Outdoor activities should also be postponed until the cooler morning or evening hours. It is also important to drink enough fluids and, if necessary, cool down by showering or bathing. Given the high temperatures, high UV exposure is also expected. Therefore, protective measures such as sunscreen and hats are essential.

Groups of people who are particularly at risk

Particular caution is required for vulnerable groups. These include older people, those in need of care, people with chronic previous illnesses, pregnant women, small children and homeless people. Accordingly, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) emphasizes that due to climate change, an increase in hot days is to be expected in Germany, which could have significant effects on health and well-being. The RKI points out that there is an urgent need for effective heat protection.

The RKI has been carrying out evaluations of heat-related excess mortality for some time and emphasizes that effective heat protection requires cooperation between various ministries, authorities and institutions. Only through good monitoring can reliable information be provided and effective information offerings and heat prevention measures be created. To this end, the RKI is in contact with relevant actors in Germany, such as the Federal Ministry of Health, the Federal Center for Health Education and the Federal Environment Agency.

The forecasts for the coming days make it clear that the heat is not only a challenge for individuals, but also for society as a whole. In order to counteract rising temperatures, preventative measures and education of the population are of central importance.
