On the last matchday of the Axa League, which took place on Saturday evening, HC Berchem and the Red Boys faced each other in Crauthem. This decisive battle for the championship crown ended with a clear 38:25 victory for the Red Boys, who were able to win the championship title for the first time since 2016. The stands in Crauthem were full and the atmosphere was at a fever pitch during the game.
The game went according to plan for the Red Boys. HC Berchem was only able to keep up in the first ten minutes before the Red Boys took control and didn't allow themselves to fall behind. Coach Nikola Malesevic was able to rely particularly on the strong performance of his goalkeeper Chris Auger, who had a decisive influence on the course of the game. Brice Aillaud stood out offensively and scored a remarkable eleven goals.
The season in review
HC Berchem, which won the Supercup and the Cup this season, was unable to build on its previous successes and had to settle for second place at the end of the season. In the previous play-off round, Berchem won a clear 39:24 against Diekirch, in which Yann Hoffmann scored eight goals and Philipp Leist seven goals. These successes led to Berchem getting closer and closer to their seventh title.
The other teams were also active in this crucial phase of the season. The Red Boys had previously won 32:31 in an exciting game against Dudelange, with Brice Aillaud once again shining with nine goals. This win kept them in second place and delayed Berchem winning the title.
